Linoleum Cut: Stategy and Technique
with Nicholas Collins
Cost:  $230.00
($30.00 material fee due to instructor the day of the workshop)

NCollins Workshop ImageLINOLEUM CUT: STRATEGY & TECHNIQUE with Nicholas Collins. From raw, brutal expressionism to delicate, highly detailed rendering, the linocut is truly an exciting and vital medium. We will explore examples of linocut prints from Matisse to artistic movements in Russia, Germany, Britian and Mexico. We will discuss approaches to layout and design to give you the freedom to best express your images. You can focus your approach on directly transferred images or steer away from the drawing with a more sculptural “cut & proof” repetition technique. You will develop confidence with cutting tools and learn hand printing techniques. This is an excellent, inexpensive and non-toxic art form to take with you to your home studio.

Nicholas Collins studied sculpture at UCSB, and printmaking at College of the Redwoods.  He trained in etching and linocut at KALA in Berkeley where he was an artist in residence for two years.  His work can be seen at Northcoast Artists Gallery in Fort Bragg, Prentice Gallery in Mendocino and Collector Art Shop in Berkeley.

($65.00 material fee due to instructor the day of the workshop)

JAarons Workshop Image2

BUILDING CLAY CANVASES AND GLAZE PAINTING with James Aarons.  In this 2 day workshop we will explore the possibilities of building ceramic canvases in sections to create multi-part wall pieces. Week 1 we will design and construct shapes, week 2 we will add color and glaze. If the group is interested I am also offering an optional short 3rd session in my studio to review our results and discuss what works, what doesn’t and what to try next.  My practice is all about multiples and exploring how shape, color and space interact with each other. Whether expressing fine lines, fields of color and crisp forms or freehand 3D doodling and organic texture, the possibilities are vast. You will be free to head in the direction of your creative desire as we build multi-part compositions for wall mounting.

James Aarons is a reformed modern dancer, ceramic artist and yoga teacher who combines the gestural necessities of each of these skills when considering what to do. Whether it’s making a drawing of a line or articulating a direction in space, the quality of the movement that creates it is what informs his work most. Mr. Aarons’ work is collected by private and corporate clients nationally and is in the collections of Kaiser Permanente, Sodexo USA, Northwest Mutual and the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, among others. He splits his time between Mokelumne Hill and San Francisco, CA; one for studio and the other for restaurants and civilization.

EDertner Workshop Image

PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING IN OIL with Erin Dertner. Oils have texture, sumptuous color and blend beautifully. They are forgivable by nature which makes for a more relaxed painting experience. Erin uses a palette knife and this is an opportunity to learn this technique, but you are welcome to bring your brushes. Participants will learn to shift thinking from “Foreground, Middle Ground and Background” to “Shapes, Values and Edges”, while enjoying Erin’s lighthearted manner and way of seeing in full spectrum color. The class will spend one day painting indoors and the next, outdoors, so pack up your easel, clothing layers and visor and be prepared to hit the byways. However, bring along a few photos in case of bad weather. Prepare to enjoy this 2 day workshop!

Erin Dertner has enjoyed teaching both in the U.S. and abroad in watercolor, oil and acrylic.  Her current focus is light infused impressionistic oil landscapes when she can portray the cool shadows of the early morning or those that fall long and warm in the evening.  She’s been exhibiting in galleries for the past 30 years and her works are represented in galleries in Mendocino, Carmel, St. Helena, Lahaina, Boulder, among others.
